Fair Publication Policy

Recognising the contributions of technical staff to research is important in all instances

The University of Edinburgh became a signatory to the Technician Commitment in 2017 and has developed an action plan committing to ensuring technicians contributions are visible and recognised. A Fair Publication policy is key to delivering our Technician Commitment aims and an integral part of Culture of Care.

CMVM published a Fair Publication Policy a few years ago, link provided below,  which outlines the importance of recognising the contributions of technical staff to research and expectations regarding acknowledgements or co-authorship for core facility staff and we would expect endorsement of this from researchers working within BVS facilities.

Staff of Bioresearch & Veterinary Services (BVS) should, at the very least, be acknowledged on publications resulting from work carried out in BVS facilities, and where they have made an intellectual contribution to the research, they should have the opportunity to participate in drafting the pertinent part of the paper, and give final approval to the wording and conclusions drawn before publication.

Acknowledgement of everyone’s efforts in presentations and publications must be an accepted baseline.

It is also important to acknowledge that some staff members are pursuing a research career through the IAT or a university degree. For these individuals, being a recognised author is not just a matter of professional courtesy but a critical component of their career development and academic progression. Ensuring their contributions are duly credited in publications supports their career aspirations and aligns with the university's commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive research environment. Recognising their work as co-authors or through acknowledgements is essential for their professional growth and validates the integral role they play in advancing research.
